I make it a point to not order from Domino’s Pizza. When I do order Domino’s it is due to high amounts laziness and frugality. It’s not that their pizza is terribly horrendous, it’s just that it’s not very good. Imagine my surprise when my brother and a friend walk through my front door carrying two Domino’s boxes.

Said friend is somewhat of a pizza connoisseur, so I’m inclined to trust him with matters involving various ingredients spread across flat dough. He has, however, ordered from Domino’s more times than any other human and worked as a delivery driver at a location for a number of months, so he may be a bit bias. However, apparently there are far more people in the world akin to my way of thinking – that Domino’s is on the bottom of the pizza hierarchy – so much so that they’ve decided to change their recipe.

There’s a video of alleged customers sharing their opinions on the pizza. The most common complain given is that the crust “tastes like cardboard.” What they’ve done now, though, is actually quite nice. There’s a nice garlic butter spread all around it, and I could have swore there was also a dusting of parmesan cheese, though this isn’t an upgrade any of their literature mentions. I quote Julie Powell of Julie & Julia – “Think it over, any time you taste something that’s delicious beyond imagining and you say ‘what’s in this?’ the answer is always going to be butter.” The pizza sauce is a lot spicier with the addition of red pepper, a common condiment to pizza in many households anyway. The cheese is a blend of mozzarella and provolone, and seems to be much thicker than it has been previous.

As you can see in the image above, the pizza is quite greasy, and if left it the cardboard container for too long can actually reabsorb the grease through the crust, making it soggy.

I’ve always preferred the little neighborhood pizza shops that are scattered throughout Pittsburgh, but the new Domino’s pizza is a welcome addition. Keeping their prices as low as always combine with this brand new recipe definitely helps them secure the top spot amongst the pizza delivery chains.
